Question From My Email Bag: Where Can I Find Colored Tea Lights?

The following reader question was emailed to me last week. While I don't usually have time to respond to the "where can I find this" type emails I just couldn't resist this one since I just saw the very thing she was looking for for cheap in a store!

"Do you know where I can find colored tea lights? My tea light votives are clear and want to add some color but all I've found are plain white candles. Thanks, Anjani"

It just so happens that I was at Ikea the other day (looking for a shoe rack, totally unrelated to weddings) and I saw mountains of colored tea lights selling for just $3.99 for a pack of 42. They had oranges, purples, reds, blues and greens! Here are the orange packs:

This question brings me to our featured article this month...

Featured Article: How to Find Wedding Supplies For Cheap

If you want to find wedding supplies for cheap and especially if you want to find unique wedding supplies (like Anjani above) you need to do two things. First, stop looking for "wedding supplies" and second, start thinking like a DIYer!

What does this mean? Well if you go to stores that specifically sell things as "wedding supplies" you'll never find a good price or anything unique. Same goes with internet searches. As many seasoned planners know, if you call up a catering company and say you're hosting a wedding the price will be higher than if you just say you are hosting a party. Same with supplies. Things marketed as "wedding" something will tend to be priced higer than the same thing elsewhere without the magic wedding label.

To think like a "DIYer" you have to figure out what you want and think of alternative places to find it or other ways to make it happen. This means hitting places like the Home Depot, Ikea, 99Cents Stores, grocery stores, restaurant supply stores and thrift stores for your supplies. It means not nixing a product because it is the wrong color...think like a DIYer and realize that you could use spray paint or cover it with fabric!

Keep your eyes and mind open and you'll be amazed at the ideas you come up with while shopping at the grocery store or on a walk. Notice plants in your neighborhood...do people throw out interesting tree trimmings that you could use? Pinecones or rocks you could start collecting?

You'll have the unique (and cheap!) wedding of your dreams with a little creativity and searching.
